Germany is one of the most popular destinations for Indian students, known for strong engineering, technology and science programmes and for public universities with low or no tuition fees in most states. The visa process is document-heavy and time-sensitive. We guide you through it from admission to appointment.
Who this is for
Students planning a bachelor’s or master’s degree, a preparatory course (Studienkolleg) or a language course in Germany.
The process at a glance
- Choose your course and university. We help you shortlist programmes that match your academic profile and budget.
- Apply for admission. Many universities use central application portals such as uni-assist, and some accept direct applications.
- Complete the APS certificate. Indian applicants are generally required to obtain the Academic Evaluation Centre (APS) certificate before applying for the visa and, for many universities, before admission. Start this early.
- Arrange proof of financial resources. Most applicants use a blocked account (Sperrkonto) or an approved alternative to show living costs for the first year.
- Take out health insurance. Valid cover is required for the visa and enrolment.
- Book your visa appointment through the German mission’s appointment system and prepare for biometrics.
- Submit your visa application with complete, consistent documents.
- Receive your decision, then plan your travel and accommodation.
Costs to plan for
Tuition is free at most public universities, but you still pay a semester contribution, living costs, insurance and visa fees. Some states and private universities charge tuition for non-EU students. We explain the real total cost before you commit.
Common reasons for delay or refusal
- Incomplete or inconsistent documents
- Unclear study plan or course choice
- Insufficient or poorly documented funds
- Late APS or appointment booking
FAQ
Is the APS certificate mandatory? For Indian students it is generally required by the German mission and by many universities. Check the current requirement for your course.
Do I need to know German? Not for English-taught programmes, but you will need proof of English. Basic German helps with daily life and part-time work.
Can I work while studying? International students may work for a limited number of days per year. Check the current rules.
What is a blocked account? A bank account into which you deposit the required amount for living costs, released to you monthly after you arrive.
